Description | The Autonomous Republic of Adjara was formed in 1990 upon the dissolution of the former Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of Adjara. It includes the province of Adjara, part of the territories of Chaneti, Guria, Machakheli and Samtsakhi, and six municipalities, Batumi, Kedi, Kobuleti, Shuakhevi, Khelvachauri and Khulo. It has its own constitution and governing bodies. These governing bodies include its highest representative body, the Supreme Council (უმაღლესი საბჭო), and the Chairman of the Government (მთავრობის თავმჯდომარე), which is the autonomous republic's executive arm. Both the Adjara Supreme Council and the Chairman of the Government are accountable to the President of Georgia and Georgia's Supreme Council. The administrative center of the republic is Batumi. |
