| Info | Representative Nathan Deal was first elected to Congress in 1992 and serves the people of Ninth Congressional District of Georgia. Born in 1942 and raised in Sandersville, Ga., Nathan is an advocate for the concerns and needs of the 20 rural North Georgia counties he represents (Catoosa, Cherokee, Dade, Dawson, Fannin, Forsyth, Gilmer, Gordon, Habersham, Hall, Lumpkin, Murray, Pickens, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, Walker, White, Whitfield).
As a legislator, Nathan has played an important role in the passage of many bills important to his constituents and our country. He was the original co-author of the legislation that later came to be known as Megan's Law, a bill that requires police to notify members of a community when a convicted child molester moves into their neighborhood. Nathan has also been a leader on reforming our Immigration laws. As a member of the Speaker's Immigration Task Force, he helped pass the reform bill in 1996 that has strengthened America's immigration laws. Nathan has also been instrumental in passing legislation to reform our welfare system and to balance the federal budget by cutting spending and taxes.
Nathan has been recognized for his protection of issues important to his constituents on numerous occasions since his election to Congress. He has been a multiple winner of the Spirit of Enterprise Award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He has been awarded the Guardian of Seniors' Rights Award by the 60 Plus Association and was the 1995 Legislator of the Year for the Georgia School Foods Service Association. Mercer University presented Nathan with their Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1993.
Growing up as the son of two school teachers and now the husband of a teacher, Nathan feels right at home working on Education issues. He also has the privilege of serving on the powerful House Commerce Committee. Nathan's past experiences as a State Senate Committee Chairman and President Pro-Tempore of the Georgia Senate enable him to effectively use his legislative skills to serve as a Deputy Whip for the House Leadership team.
Nathan brings a diverse background of volunteerism and employment with him to Washington that includes serving his country in many different capacities. After graduating from Mercer University in 1964 and Mercer Law school in 1966, Nathan was a Captain in the U.S. Army until 1968. After the Army, he moved to Gainesville, Ga., where he began an extensive career in the public legal system.
In 1970, Nathan was an Assistant District Attorney for the Northeastern Judicial Circuit of Georgia. He then became a Juvenile Court Judge for Hall County in 1971. He was in the private practice of law in Gainesville, Ga., for over 23 years. While in private practice, Nathan performed what he likes to describe as "street level law." His office was always on the first floor, accessible to anyone. Nathan gave up his law practice after being elected to Congress.
Nathan is married to Sandra Dunagan Deal and has four children: Jason, Mary Emily, Carrie, and Katie. He is a member and ordained Deacon of the Gainesville First Baptist Church where he enjoys teaching Sunday School. Nathan serves on the Board of Trustees at Mercer University and on the Advisory Board of Honors Programs at North Georgia College and State University. He is a past president and lifetime member of the Gainesville Rotary Club.
