Neil was born in 1961 and lives in Stroud with his wife, Laurence, and children, James and twins Alicia and Rebecca. He was educated at St Peter's School York and Nottingham University where he studied politics. Laurence is a Research Fellow at the University of West of England.

Neil has spent many years in farming, producing traditional beef and lamb. He is a public affairs consultant with JBP (Associates) Ltd, based in Bristol, and has several other business interests including promotion of contemporary art, and small business incubation and development. Neil is a Governor of Stroud College (Chairman of F&GP) and also a Governor of Randwick School. He is a member of the Severn Vale Rotary Club.

Neil is a former chairman and, latterly, chief executive, of Northumbria Daybreak, a charity caring for people with learning disabilities. He also has been a visiting lecturer at several universities teaching British Politics, Rural Economic Development and Politics of the European Union.

Neil's hobbies include travel, golf, motor racing and the environment, especially woodland.

Neil's Experience

Neil has been a County Councillor, focusing, in particular, on education, and has continued his interest in this field. He has fought twice before in Parliamentary Elections, firstly, seeking to replace Denis Healey in Leeds East in 1992, and secondly, Stroud in 2001.

Neil has been active in foreign policy areas through being a member of the Foreign Affairs Forum and the Royal Institute of International Affairs. He has contributed to a number of political and academic conferences, in Britain and abroad, on a range of subjects, including politics and the media, social policy and the future of the European Union.
