Info Former Broward State Rep. Jack Tobin, a colorful and sometimes controversial fixture in state politics for nearly two decades, died Tuesday from cancer. He was 69.

Tobin, a former Margate mayor and commissioner, served 16 years as a Democratic state lawmaker until retiring in 1998. He then turned to lobbying without missing a beat, continuing to work on behalf of cities in Broward County. His son, David, said his father was still at work at the Capitol as recently as two weeks ago.

“He really truly enjoyed politics -- not only local government, but state government. as well. He was able to get along with the folks from Broward and also forged a strong relationship with lawmakers in North Florida.’’

Tobin, a Democrat, made his leap frrom Margate politics to state politics in 1992 when legislative districts were redrawn to reflect west Broward’s condo boom. As a member of the legislature’s “Broward Mafia,’’ he represented Margate, Coconut Creek and Deerfield Beach. Tobin and the other legislators carried great political clout in the Capitol, landing Broward projects in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

His accomplishments included legislation to benefit the elderly, children and mental health advocates.

“”He lived life to the fullest, he had a big heart and kept up his job until the very end,’’ said Margate City Manager Frank Porcella, who knew him for 30 years. “He brought a lot of dollars to Broward.’’

Tobin’s longtime colleague and friend for three decades, former House veteran Fred Lippman, described him as: “Loyal, trustworthy and full of humanity.’’
