InfoHeather was born and raised in Broward County and has lived in District 3 since 1982. She has deep roots in the community and is honored to have been appointed by Governor Scott, and subsequently elected August 26, 2014. In June, 2016 Heather was re-elected unopposed to the School Board of Broward County, representing the students, staff and school communities of District 3.

Heather is a 3rd generation Broward County resident and a proud product of Broward County Schools. As a student in Broward County Heather attended Lauderhill Paul Turner Elementary, Bethune Elementary, Rogers Middle School, Hollywood Hills High School and Stranahan High School. After graduating from Florida Atlantic University with a Bachelor’s degree in English, she spent 5 years working in her family’s business, Pomper Sheet Metal, in Oakland Park. There she honed her communication, organization, and general administrative skills while learning fiscal responsibility and sound business practice. Heather followed her passion and entered the field of education, teaching reading at Lauderhill Middle Community School for three years. After a year off to spend time with her newborn child, Heather returned to teaching reading in Broward County. She was proud to become a member of the faculty at Stranahan High School, her alma mater, giving back in classrooms where she once sat as a student herself.

With her second child, Heather searched for a career change that would provide her flexibility while allowing her to continue to impact students. Merging her business experience, with the experience as a reading teacher, Heather joined the Teen Trendsetters™ Reading Mentors team as a program manager in 2007 with the Volunteer Florida Foundation. Heather served as a Regional Program Manager with the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, managing the Teen Trendsetters™ Reading Mentors program and family literacy scholarships. Heather greatly enjoyed the opportunity to impact many Florida students through their participation in Teen Trendsetters Reading Mentors. Heather continues her commitment to education and brings practical field knowledge to her position as a School Board member, working to improve literacy for students of all ages.

Heather’s community involvement includes having served as the chair of the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Education Advisory Board, as a member of the Broward County Public Schools District Advisory County, and former PTA President at Bayview Elementary. During her time on the Education Advisory Board Heather attended Student Success Opportunity School meetings in the community, and encouraged the members to take an active role in education issues. Heather believes strongly in the power of family and community involvement in education, and volunteered to serve as a PTA committee chair as soon as her eldest child entered Bayview Elementary. In her role as PTA president, Heather encouraged members to advocate for children, and has worked diligently with the Board to support education initiatives at the school.

In her leisure time Heather enjoys attending her children’s sports activities, reading, biking and spending time with family and friends.

Heather’s passion for education coupled with her business experience provide her a unique perspective as a board member. Her community involvement and engagement with local public schools as an advocate for education are a testament to her passion for ensuring every student in Broward County receives a high quality education.

Currently Heather represents the School Board on the following committees:

Broward County Housing Council
Broward County Cultural Council
United Way of Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse Board of Governors
Friends of Birch State Park Board of Directors
Museum of Discovery and Science Board of Trustees
