Info | Norman Kirk, known as "Big Norm" due to his large frame, is one of New Zealand's more beloved PM's (despite or because he was one of the shortest serving). In his time, Kirk was regarded as the most formidable debater in the chamber and he often dominated its proceedings. However, his health was undermined by both his punishing work schedule and his poor diet. Kirk also grew paranoid about younger members of the caucus (such as Bill Rowling), who he thought were plotting against him (though there was no evidence of such).
While Kirk's tenure was short, he did take a strongly anti-apartheid stand, refusing to allow the South Africa rugby team to visit and the first year of his government saw a budget surplus (though the global economic slowdown and an oil shock cut short the government's honeymoon).
