During college vacations and breaks he worked as a Staff Reporter at the Norwich Bulletin. Malone graduated from Eastern in 1983 with a degree in English and Political Science.
Following college he went to work for the Citizen Group Newspapers of Brookline, MA., where he worked as a political reporter for the Boston Ledger covering the Boston City Council, the Boston School Committee and the Boston neighborhoods of the Fenway, Back Bay, Beacon Hill and the North End. In 1987, he was nominated by the Rendon Report as the Best Political Reporter in Boston. He later became a staff and campaign aide to then Boston City Councilor At-Large Michael J. McCormack.
