InfoMatt Claman took the Oath of Office as Acting Mayor of Anchorage on January 3, 2009. Before becoming Acting Mayor, Matt represented West Anchorage on the Anchorage Assembly. His colleagues unanimously elected him Chair of the Assembly in April 2008.

Matt Claman was raised and graduated from high school in Dallas, Texas. He graduated from Colorado College with a degree in history. He followed his dream and came to Alaska in 1980, working as a cook in remote mining camps. Claman went to law school at the University of Texas. After graduating with honors, Matt returned to Alaska to make his home, raise his family, and establish his career. Matt’s law practice served the needs of Alaskans. He represented commercial fisherman, families in crisis, and local businesses. He managed his own small law business for over 11 years. A skilled teacher, Matt taught law classes at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
Matt’s community activities are as varied as Alaska.

Matt served on the Heritage Land Bank Advisory Commission beginning in 2005 and was chair in 2006-2007. In 2002, Alaska lawyers elected Matt to the Board of Governors for the Alaska Bar Association and he served as President in 2007-2008. On the Board of Governors, Matt was instrumental in arranging Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s visit to Anchorage for the 2008 Alaska Bar Convention. Past volunteer service includes stints on the boards of the Anchorage Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Trailside Discovery, the Alaska Center for the Environment, and Planned Parenthood of Alaska. On all of the boards, he has taken leadership duties and responsibilities and worked effectively with the other board members to improve the organizations.
An active Alaskan who loves the outdoors, Matt hikes, skis, bikes, and boats.

Matt has run the Crow Pass Crossing Wilderness Marathon and skied the Tour of Anchorage several times, and he has competed in numerous bicycle races around Anchorage and across Alaska. He is an Emergency Medical Technician and an accomplished river guide, regularly guiding trips in the Grand Canyon. Matt brings this same energy, stamina, and enthusiasm to his work as Acting Mayor.

Indoors, Matt played in recreational hockey and basketball leagues for many years. He has shared his knowledge of these team sports by volunteering as an assistant coach for hockey and basketball teams—both boys and girls.

Family life.

Matt has been married to Lisa Rieger for 19 years. Lisa is Vice-President and General Counsel of Cook Inlet Tribal Council, one of Alaska’s most successful non-profit corporations. Earlier, she taught for 11 years as a professor at the Justice Center, University of Alaska Anchorage. Her current public service includes serving on the board of directors of the Alaska Native Justice Center, Alaska Pro Bono Program, and Covenant House.

Matt and Lisa have two children, Maia and Benjamin. Both children attend Anchorage public schools. Matt’s commitment to family, understanding of community values, diverse experience, and varied skills are assets to our community in his service as Acting Mayor.
