U.S. Senator (DR-NC) 12/13/1815-11/14/1828. Elected to complete the term of Sen. Francis Locke. President pro tempore of the Senate during the Nineteenth Congress; chairman, Committee on Foreign Relations (Fifteenth, Nineteenth and Twentieth Congresses), Committee to Audit and Control the Contingent Expense (Seventeenth Congress). Resigned from office on 11/14/1828.
Candidate for U.S. Vice President in the 1824 election.
President of the State constitutional convention in 1835
Presidential Elector (D-NC) 1836; presided over the meeting of the Presidential Electors in NC as his last public function.
