Info | Born in Stratford, Ontario, in 1956, and raised on the family farm in Northeasthope Township (Perth East), John attended S.S.#3 Clachan and Northeasthope Public School. He graduated from Stratford Northwestern Secondary School in 1975 as an Ontario Scholar. Upon graduation, he managed the family dairy farm until it ceased operation in 1998.
Since 1982, he has been the Treasurer and part-owner of Greenville Liquid Plant Foods, a fertilizer and crop input business handling environmentally friendly products for sustainable agriculture. Greenville deals with farmers throughout Ontario as well as the United States. It provides inputs for a wide range of crops including fruits, vegetables, corn, beans, small grains and hay crops.
Greenville Liquid Plant Foods is a strong community-minded business which supports such local causes as the Canadian Food Grains Bank and the Brocksden School Museum.
From 1972 to 1980 John was a proud member of the Northeasthope Junior Farmers, a community service club, that enabled John to be involved as a volunteer for the first Pork Congress ever held in Ontario. As an environmentally conscious young man, he helped this group to plant trees in Northeasthope Township near the Hamlet of Lisbon.
In 1978 he drove his family's 1927 McCormick-Deering tractor in the 125th Anniversary of Perth County, in Stratford, to support this rural heritage event. He is an active member of IH Chapter #20 (Ontario) with a keen interest in preserving antique tractors and machinery. In 2003 John contributed antique International Harvester tractors to CANPLOW (World Plowing Match) in Elora. He also contributed antique tractors to the 2005 International Plowing Match in Listowel.
John is a fifth generation farmer in Northeasthope Township. He continues to reside on and work the family homestead. This farm has remained in the Rutherford family since 1852.
