Liberal reformist party founded by Savka Dabčević-Kučar, the most influential Croatian female politician during the communist period and a key player behind the Croatian Spring (Maspok), a democratization effort that took place from 1967 to 1971. Dabčević-Kučar's policy of refusing coalition invitations in a effort to distinguish the party as a moderate 'third way', wound up instead humiliating it by leaving it out in the cold, forcing Dabčević-Kučar's departure. Party has been led by Stjepan Čuraj since December 12, 2020 [Hrvatska narodna stranka - liberalni demokrati (HNS)].
