Center-left party born from the National Democratic Initiative Committee created by oft-time future presidential candidate Mountaga Tall. The Committee was the first organization to demand a multiparty system in Mali. Tall was the first to mobilize Malians to battle the authoritarian regime of Moussa Traore, which continued until Traoré's fall on March 26, 1991. Though launched with some priomise, the party faced divisions almost instantly, which culminated in the mass departure of members to form the Party for National Renewal (PARENA) in 1995. Continued inter-member rivalries, often violent, have dogged the CNID further. Tall was booted out as an MP for Ségou in 2013. Party currently holds four seat in the National Assembly [Congrès national d'initiative démocratique (CNID)].
