Center-left successor to, and rebrand of, the Indo-Guyanese People's Progressive Party launched in 1950. Party leaders decided in 1991 to abandon its ethnic exclusivity and take steps to erase its image as a party enmeshed in Marxist-Leninism. It was felt that the addition of "Civic Group" tempered public views of the party as authoritarian. The new PPP/C redrew its platform, changed its logo and management, and removed all references to "Marxism-Leninism" and "socialism" in its literature and constitution at a party congress held on May 5, 2024. Party has been led by Guyana's Vice President (since August 2, 2020) Bharrat Jagdeo.
