DescriptionA decade ago, Mitt Romney went on CNN and made a statement that was widely perceived as a major mistake.

"Russia is, without question, our number one geopolitical foe," Romney... told Wolf Blitzer in March of that year. "They fight every cause for the world's worst actors."

Obama and his team pounced on the comment, insisting that it showed Romney was hopelessly out of touch when it came to the threats facing the US...

Nope, it's still wrong. Russia WANTS to be our number one geopolitical foe, but they're maybe number two, giving them the benefit of the doubt. And even that may be a stretch.

Russia is a decaying empire desperately reaching for its past glories. They have about the same GDP as Italy, which isn't exactly known to be an economic powerhouse itself. They can't project power globally and their military is rapidly decaying. The best they can do it try for regional hegemony, which is what they are doing. Of course their region is also limited to what used to be in the former USSR.

This certainly doesn't put them on a level with China.

Chris Cilizza continues to be a putz confusing recency with relevancy.

Mr. Cilizza, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

So, while it isn't a direct refutation, I think this current quote by Mitt Romney suggests that he knows Russia isn't of the importance it wants to be:

We’re seeing a small, feral-eyed man who was trying to shape the world in the image where, once again, Russia would be an empire, and that’s not going to happen. [Link]

This is also a good current Romney quote:

"Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar, I don’t know them," Romney said during an appearance on CNN. "I’m reminded of the old line from the Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid movie where one character says, 'Morons, I have morons on my team.'" - [Link]

Asked on Sunday by CNN’s Dana Bash about the 2012 exchange, Romney asserted that China is currently the greatest threat to the U.S. “long term.” But he also backed up his statement on Russia in the wake of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Thursday invasion of Ukraine.

“They are a geopolitical adversary, poking us where they can,” Romney said. - [Link]
