Description | The Hungarian parliament passed controversial legislation on Wednesday that includes a ban on helping groups that assist migrants.
Under the law, anyone found to be “facilitating illegal immigration,” such as by assisting nongovernmental organizations that help migrants seek asylum, faces up to a year in jail, according to the BBC.
The so-called Stop Soros legislation — named after financier George Soros, whom Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has accused of meddling in domestic politics and supporting Muslim migrants — also includes measures to further restrict asylum rules. Immigrants seeking to enter Hungary from a third country deemed not to be threatening would not be able to claim protection, for example.
The legislation has faced fierce international criticism. The United Nations refugee agency urged Hungary to throw out the proposed bill, saying it would “deprive people who are forced to flee their homes of critical aid and services,” while further inflaming tensions in the region. |
