DescriptionU.S. Rep. Aaron Schock has opted to bypass a run for the Republican Illinois governor nomination and instead will seek a fourth term in Congress next year, a top aide said Thursday.

Schock, 31, from Peoria, ultimately decided he could do more good politically for the state by staying in the Republican-led House than by seeking the governor’s office, said Steven Shearer, Schock’s chief of staff.

“It’s been up and down,” Shearer said of Schock’s decision-making for 2014. “He really has strongly considered all aspects of it.”

Schock’s decision removes from the potential field a youthful former state legislator with a demonstrated ability to raise money.

He raised nearly $717,000 in the first three months of the year for his federal campaign account and had more than $2.7 million available at the start of April. That money could have been used in a state race.

Shearer said Schock’s increasing seniority in the House after the changeover of members in the previous two national congressional elections was a significant factor in the decision not to seek the governor’s office. Schock is only two seats away from the halfway point of seniority on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee.
