Description | Investigation Into Connecticut Governor Widens
Federal prosecutors investigating Gov. John G. Rowland are casting an ever-wider net in their search for evidence of corruption, requesting records of his cell phone calls, his investments, even his vacations.
Rowland is being investigated for accepting gifts and free work on his cottage from politically connected friends, state employees and a state contractor. He has said he never provided favors in return.
The third-term Republican governor has come under increasing pressure to resign, and the Legislature has opened an inquiry into whether he should be impeached.
Rowland's office received a far-reaching subpoena this week, seeking details about the governor's finances, gifts from friends, renovations to his summer cottage and the sale of his Washington condominium.
A survey from Quinnipiac University, released earlier this week, found that 71 percent of registered voters believe Rowland can no longer do his job effectively. |
