Description | Caroline Kennedy is the top candidate to head to Tokyo as the U.S. Ambassador to Japan, according to a report.
Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday that Kennedy is the leading candidate to replace John Roos, a lawyer and former Obama fundraiser. The 55-year-old daughter of former President John F. Kennedy served as a co-chairman of President Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection bid, and was a key backer of his 2008 campaign.
It is common for presidents to name leading fundraisers and backers to plum diplomatic posts, although the American Foreign Service Association said Obama has done so at a higher rate than average.
Caroline Kennedy had been a leading contender for Hillary Clinton’s New York Senate seat in 2009 after Clinton was named secretary of state. That seat instead went to now-Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. |
