Description | Wisconsin's Democratic Party has lost eight leaders in the last 20 months.
Tom Barrett and Kathleen Falk lost their third bids for statewide office. Former U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold lost and founded Progressives United, partly out of frustration with the party. Rep. Dave Obey and former Gov. Jim Doyle retired, and U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl is joining them. Assistant Assembly Leader Donna Seidel lost a state Senate bid Tuesday. Assembly Speaker Mike Sheridan lost in 2010.
Since the 2010 elections, Republicans have won 89 Wisconsin elections for Congress, governor, attorney general and the Legislature; Democrats won 57. That gap narrows - 146 Republican wins to 124 for Democrats - if the 2008 elections are included.
Two questions loom over this weekend's state Democratic Party convention in Appleton: Who are our leaders? What's the message? |
