DescriptionIn an unusual move, Gov. Deval Patrick endorsed Elizabeth Warren today in the hotly contested U.S. Senate race as the neophyte political candidate continues to struggle with questions about her heritage. Patrick, who usually doesn’t endorse until the Democratic primary is over, backed Warren as the candidate was also coming under fire for failing to commit to additional debates with her Democratic rival Marisa DeFranco. “Both are compelling people with a strong message. Both are working hard to earn a place on the ballot, and both are running positive campaigns. I wish them both well. But today I am proud to endorse Elizabeth Warren,” Patrick wrote in an email to supporters. At a press conference this afternoon at Warren’s headquarters in Somerville, Patrick praised the Harvard law professor saying: “Elizabeth Warren is my friend and I believe she should be the next U.S. Senator from Massachusetts. I love this candidate. I’m excited about this candidate.” Supporters packed into the headquarters and booed reporters when they asked Warren about her undocumented claims about her Cherokee past. Patrick also jumped to her defense answering the question himself. “We don’t care about that subject,” said Patrick. The governor did admit that Democrats have “a fight on our hands” in trying to unseat U.S. Sen. Scott Brown. Patrick’s boost comes three days before the state Democratic Party’s convention, where both Warren and DeFranco need support from 15 percent of the delegates to get on the ballot. DeFranco said she was “disappointed” by Patrick’s decision. “I am disappointed that he chose to do this before the primary and three days before the convention,” she said.
