Description | Congressman Mike Michaud has taken out papers to run for the U.S. Senate seat, the secretary of state’s office has confirmed.
The Democrat who has represented Maine’s 2nd District in Congress since 2002 jumped into the race about 18 hours after U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe announced she would not seek reelection.
Since her announcement, there has been widespread speculation about who might enter the race — both from Democrats and Republicans.
Another big-name Democrat, U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, is still weighing her options, according to her staff, but has not taken out papers. On Tuesday, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee launched an online effort to draft her into the race. The PCCC was partially responsible for encouraging Democrat Elizabeth Warren to challenge Republican Scott Brown in Massachusetts.
As of noon Wednesday, Michaud was the only candidate to officially join the race since Snowe’s announcement. |
