DescriptionCarl Lewis says his race is run — for now. No more legal challenges, no chance of appearing on the November ballot, either as a state Senate or even as an Assembly candidate.

The nine-time Olympic gold medalist said today that he will not contest Thursday’s federal appeals court decision to remove him from the ballot, leaving state Sen. Dawn Marie Addiego (R-Burlington) uncontested — at least for now — and depriving headline writers of the chance to reach for more sports puns to describe his brief but troubled candidacy.

Just a week ago, Lewis, 50, had been all set to run. In a 2-1 vote, a three-judge federal appeals panel had overturned Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno and a lower federal court to reinstate Lewis on the ballot after a five-month court battle. In an usual turnaround, however, the same three judges heard the case again on Tuesday and reversed themselves on Thursday, ruling that Lewis could not have lived in New Jersey for the four years required of state Senate candidates because he voted in California in 2008 and 2009.
