Description | Things are getting nasty down in Imperial and San Diego counties, where former state Sen. Denise Moreno Ducheny, a Democrat, and current state Sen. Juan Vargas, also a Democrat, are eyeing the same congressional seat.
Vargas sent out a news release Monday announcing legislation to abolish the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board - on which Ducheny sat until she resigned this week and formally launched her campaign.
"It is time to stop this wasteful board from being the place where termed out, drunk-driving legislators get an easy government job and get paid $128,000 per year at taxpayers' expense," Vargas said in a written statement.
The release went on to list the board members, with this little note alongside both Ducheny and former Sen. Roy Ashburn's name: "Drunk-driving arrest."
It's a reference to her 2000 arrest; she ultimately pleaded to the lesser charge of reckless driving. Ashburn, a Republican from Bakersfield, made headlines when he was arrested last year - an event that led him to come out as gay.
Somehow, though, we don't think Ashburn was the intended target of this attack. After all, there's never been much love lost between the two Democrats. Ducheny, who was termed out of the Legislature last year, endorsed Vargas' opponent to replace her. |
