Description | Yet another Democrat is jumping into the already-crowded primary in Illinois’ 17th Congressional District.
Former state Rep. Mike Boland of East Moline has scheduled a news conference Wednesday to declare his candidacy.
In a statement Monday, Boland said, “we need problem-solvers in Washington willing to work across the aisle to create jobs but who will stand strong in defense of Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid and veterans benefits.”
Boland, who has been touring the district for weeks to talk about a potential candidacy, had planned to wait until after the Labor Day holiday to make an announcement, but he said Monday he was getting enough encouragement that “we just kind of said, let’s do it.”
As a state legislator for 16 years, Boland has name identification in the most populous urban center in the district. But he also joins a field that is diverse and has candidates with deep political ties in the state. He also will be the fourth person of six in the race who is from the Quad-Cities.
