Description | Former Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle said he may run for mayor.
“I am strongly considering it,” Kunkle told The Dallas Morning News on Wednesday morning. “I have looked at the announced candidates and believe I could offer a good alternative. I have experience working in every neighborhood in Dallas. I was a successful police chief under difficult circumstances. I know most of the community leaders. I've seen what the needs are.”
Kunkle, 60, said he would make his decision in a week or so. He said he'd been approached by people active in the community, “and then I started contacting business leaders and they also were very encouraging.”
The former chief retired last year after almost six years as the city's top cop. Before then, he served many years as police chief and assistant city manager in Arlington.
“I've spend my entire life in city government including as an assistant city manager,” he said. “I understand how government works and how public policy decisions are made. I understand economic development. I think I could help the council to achieve common goals and that we could also work to collectively address to address some of the more chronic issues including the historical inequities between north and south Dallas.” |
