DescriptionFAIRBANKS — An attorney for Joe Miller told the Alaska Supreme Court on Friday that campaign observers did not have time to be properly trained, which is why they challenged votes for Sen. Lisa Murkowski where her name was written as “Murkowski Lisa” when the Juneau write-in tally took place in November.

But at the time the votes were being counted, another attorney for Miller was quoted by an Alaska Dispatch reporter as saying the Miller attorneys decided to stop challenging those votes after they realized candidates were listed with their last names first.

The Miller campaign people were on hand in Juneau at the moment the count began, so it’s hard to imagine how this took place without them knowing all about it.

In a court proceeding Friday, attorney Michael Morley was questioned by Justice Walter Carpeneti about whether the Miller campaign had instructed its observers in Juneau to challenge write-in ballots for “Murkowski Lisa.”

“Absolutely not your honor,” said Morley. “We never instructed them to do this. That’s part of the whole problem with this.”
