Description | "Greg Skrepenak’s cooperation with an ongoing federal corruption probe, not the charitable works or devotion to his children extolled by his defense attorney, won the former Luzerne County commissioner a somewhat reduced sentence in a federal bribery case today.
Skrepenak, a former NFL lineman, faced 33 to 41 months in prison under federal sentencing guidelines for accepting $5,000 from a developer who won government-backed financing with his help. But U.S. Judge Richard P. Conaboy imposed a two-year sentence, citing Skrepenak’s cooperation with the investigation, outlined in a prosecution motion that has been sealed by court order.
Conaboy rejected pleas from defense attorney Peter John Moses for a further sentence reduction based on Skrepenak’s status as a single father of three children, his work for children’s charities through his own non-profit foundation and various health ailments, including sleep apnea and orthopedic problems presumably related to his years as an offensive lineman.
While lauding Skrepenak’s civic contributions, Conaboy said he did not find them “extraordinary.”
But Conaboy did stress that Skrepenak’s betrayal of the public trust was a crime that had to be taken seriously, saying he had done a “great injury to the many government and public officials to try to serve honestly.”
Conaboy noted that he had received many letters in support of Skrepenak, who had used his Facebook account to solicit letters, but the judge said he had also received letters critical of the former commissioner."
