DescriptionHARVEY, La. - The nephew of U.S. Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas said he was shocked with a Taser, punched and had his sewn-in dreadlocks pulled from his head by hospital security guards as he attempted to leave the facility Thursday afternoon.

Derek Thomas, said the incident began when he refused to put on a hospital gown to stay overnight at West Jefferson Medical Center, a move he said he made because he was concerned about the cost.

Thomas, 24, said he has epilepsy and felt a migraine coming on Thursday and accidentally took too much of his medication, which caused him to have a seizure. Thomas said his mother called an ambulance and had him taken to the hospital.

“I was getting, basically a migraine, so to speak, and just wanted to solve that,” he said. “I wasn’t doing anything to injure myself or my life.”

Thomas, who is a student at Nicholls State, said he had health insurance, but was concerned about the cost of staying overnight and said he wanted to talk to his mother first. He said four security guards then cornered him and began treating him like a troublemaker.
