DescriptionDemocrats nominate Simon to be Quinn's running mate

By DAVE McKINNEY AND STEVE CONTORNO Sun-Times Springfield Bureau

SPRINGFIELD--Illinois Democrats approved Sheila Simon to become Gov. Quinn’s running mate Saturday, handing the governor his top choice and turning back a spirited bid by State Rep. Art Turner to be the party’s nominee for lieutenant governor.

The vote by the 38-member Democratic State Central Committee backing Simon, daughter of the late U.S. Sen. Paul Simon, split along racial lines as the panel’s African-American members mostly supported Turner, the second-place finisher in the Feb. 2 Democratic primary.

But Simon prevailed on the strength of support from her native Downstate, suburbia and pockets of the city, giving Quinn the political partner he wanted to take on Republican Bill Brady and his running mate, Jason Plummer, in the Nov. 2 general election.
