DescriptionOKLAHOMA CITY — Attorney General Drew Edmondson has sent a letter to supporters saying he will not seek re-election and intends to run for governor.

"I intend to be a candidate for governor in 2010," states the letter, dated Wednesday. "I will make an official announcement sometime next year, but I want to tell you now."

Edmondson, a Democrat, said Thursday that he believes the state's lawsuit against the poultry industry will be resolved during his current term. The lawsuit alleges that poultry litter spread as fertilizer is polluting eastern Oklahoma watersheds.

"That is the last major item on my agenda as attorney general and I am ready to do something different," Edmondson said. He said he will need to raise several million dollars for the race.

Other Democrats mentioned as contenders include State Treasurer Scott Meacham and Lt. Gov. Jari Askins. Gov. Brad Henry cannot seek re-election because of term limits.
