Description | State Rep. John Fritchey of Chicago announced Tuesday morning he is running for the Cook County Board seat held by Forrest Claypool.
Fritchey is doing so with the blessing of Claypool and of Mike Quigley, the former commissioner who defeated Fritchey earlier this year in the election for Rahm Emanuel's congressional seat.
As a state representative for the past 13 years, Fritchey sometimes bucked Democratic Party regulars, styling himself as an independent and an agitator for change. He was an early critic of former Gov. Blagojevich.
Fritchey, 45, was the legislator Claypool turned to when he wanted a new state law to stop Cook County officials from goosing up their pensions with an overpaid month-or-two assignment at the end of their careers.
Fritchey, in a statement released Tuesday morning, said Quigley's departure from the board and Claypool's decision not to seek re-election have "created an urgent need for reform leadership." Talks among the three convinced Fritchey to give up his seniority in the House to run for the board. |
