Description | TALLAHASSEE - Alex Sink knows what it is like to lose the governor's race.
Nearly seven years ago, she stood next to her husband, Bill McBride, as the Tampa attorney conceded the 2002 election to incumbent Gov. Jeb Bush.
Bush crushed McBride by a 56-43 percent margin, becoming the first Republican governor in state history to win re-election.
"That was a very consuming experience for Alex and our family," McBride said. "She's seen the governor's race up close and personal. She's learned a lot of good lessons from it."
Now, Sink is making her own bid for history as she seeks to become Florida's first woman governor.
One lesson she appears to have learned is to avoid following in her husband's footsteps, although her Republican rivals may use on her the same strategy they used on McBride.
"It's just hard to compare," Sink said. "The state is in a very different situation today in terms of our economy and the struggles that we are having in our budget." |
