DescriptionRenee Gill Pratt, a former state representative and city councilwoman, was indicted by a federal grand jury today on federal racketeering charges that accuse her of operating as part of a "criminal enterprise" that also includes members of the Jefferson political family.

The indictment of Gill Pratt comes nearly one year after the federal grand jury indicted her longtime boyfriend, Mose Jefferson, his sister 4th District Assessor Betty Jefferson and Angela Coleman with various charges for skimming money from various non-profit organizations that were supposed to help impoverished youth.

The new indictment also includes the two Jeffersons and Coleman, who is Betty Jefferson's daughter and the niece of former U.S. Rep. Bill Jefferson. The four operated "a criminal enterprise for the financial and political benefit of the defendants" from 1991 through 2006, according to a news release issued by U.S. Attorney Jim Letten's office.

The indictment accuses the defendants of directly taking money from non-profit organizations established to help disadvantaged youth, as well as writing checks to people who didn't work for the groups but would kick back the money to them.

Mose Jefferson and Gill Pratt are also accused of using the grant money to pay for construction or repair work on properties they jointly owned.

Along with placing Gill Pratt in the middle of the alleged scheme to steal money from the nonprofit organizations financed with state and federal tax dollars, the racketeering conspiracy outlined by the U.S. attorney's office accuses Gill Pratt of participating in another case currently pending against Mose Jefferson.
