Description | Former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio, a conservative Republican, officially announced he is running for the Senate – and will stay in the race if Florida Gov. Charlie Crist jumps in.
He announced his intentions on the Spanish language station Univision last night, and made his official announcement this morning on his campaign website, www.marcorubio.com.
"Today I'm announcing that in 2010, I will be candidate for the U.S. Senate," Rubio said in a videotaped statement. "Some believe the path to security and prosperity is a larger government involvement in our economy... but the majority of us don't agree with that view. And we deserve a voice in American politics, and that's why I want to serve in the United States Senate."
Rubio will be mounting an aggressive conservative challenge to Crist, and has accused him of betraying core Republican principles. Since announcing his exploratory committee for Senate in March, Rubio has been openly telegraphing his disagreements with the governor. |
