Description | Simon Crean's leadership of the Labor Party has been judged terminal by his key supporters, with Kim Beazley likely to replace him.
As his wife Carole flew to be by his side, Mr Crean stayed in Canberra last night to mull over whether to resign or stay on and once again face a leadership contest against Mr Beazley.
The latest leadership crisis came after Mr Crean's former supporters and key powerbrokers, Senate leader John Faulkner and former ACTU president Martin Ferguson, told him on Wednesday night that his leadership was unsustainable.
It is believed they told Mr Crean that support for Labor during his term had "bottomed".
Another key former supporter, Bob McMullan, is said to have told Mr Crean he had switched sides.
If Mr Crean resigns or is replaced, he will be the first Labor leader not to have fought an election.
Although some in the party are working on a bloodless coup to hand the leadership over to Mr Beazley, it seems most likely that there will be a ballot on Tuesday to allow a caucus vote.
