DescriptionMayor Brian Levine has filed a form with the New Jersey Election Law EnforcementCommission, the next step in a proposed run for governor.

Levine confirmed last month that he had his eye on the governor's seat next November, and has now decided to make it official.

"This form allows me to start fundraising, collect money and form an organization,'' said Levine, who is in his second term as mayor of one of the state's largest municipalities. "I'm going to start to speak to people about potential support on the issues.''

As a Republican mayor in a Democratic town, Levine said he has been able to work across the board with his constituents, and believes he can do the same statewide.

"For a Republican to win in New Jersey, it has to be someone who can win across the aisle,'' he said. "I won twice in a Democratic town.''

He said he believes his open-government policies have helped bridge the divide between himself and the mostly-Democratic Township Council.

"I'm very straight-forward and there's no favoritism,'' Levine said. "Everything has got to be open with me.''

As a certified public accountant, Levine also said he knows how to crunch numbers and that the township is fiscally stable, even in these uncertain economic times.

"As a CPA, I wouldn't delegate,'' he said. "I would get my fingers into tax policy. Right now, the state's economy is like a Category 3 hurricane, and we're going to buy another umbrella. It's time to clean it up and get a fresh start.''

He may have quite a run for his money. Former U.S. Attorney Chris Christie is believed to be close to announcing his candidacy for the post, and as a fellow Republican, would be challenging Levine for the party's nomination.

"Chris Christie is a good guy,'' said Levine. "He's done good work over the years. He'll likely be tough to run against. But I'll tell people why I would be a good candidate. I've shown that I work well across party lines and I try to always do what's best. I think
