DescriptionFormer eBay CEO Meg Whitman is signaling she may soon be joining an already crowded field of candidates vying to replace term-limited California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2010.

Shortly before the end of the year, Whitman resigned her lucrative spots on the corporate boards of Proctor and Gamble, DreamWorks and eBay, freeing her up for a widely-rumored run for governor.

The billionaire businesswoman has not yet committed to running, but she began generating buzz as a potential candidate during the 2008 campaign while serving as a top surrogate on economic issues for GOP presidential candidate John McCain.

Whitman landed a speaking role at the GOP Convention in St. Paul and frequented the California delegation breakfasts. She has already hired Jeff Randle, a political consultant with experience working for Schwarzenegger and former Gov. Pete Wilson.
