DescriptionHe isn’t Jewish, but this week’s decision by Sen. Bob Graham of Florida not to seek a fourth term could touch off aftershocks in the Jewish political world.

It also could contribute to a seismic tremor for the Democrats, who have seen their chances for regaining control of the Senate fade as Graham and three other Southern Democratic incumbents opt out of re-election battles in 2004.

With Graham, the seat was safe for the Democrats. Without him, the race to replace him, in which the Jewish vote will play a prominent role, could be a toss-up.

Four Democrats are already vying to replace Graham. Rep. Peter Deutsch, who is Jewish, has been running hard for the Senate for several years, and Graham’s decision, which came after he pulled out of the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination race, provides the veteran legislator with his best opportunity.
