Flake seeks special Congressional session to deal with gas prices

| Description | Mesa Congressman Jeff Flake is among Republicans asking President Bush to call a special session of Congress in August to deal with high gasoline and oil prices.
The Democratic-majority Congress adjourned Friday for its usual five-week Labor Day recess. The adjournment came despite Congress not taking action on the issue of high gasoline and crude oil prices.
Flake (who represents the East Valley) wants Bush to call Congress back in session to deal with the issue.
Partisan maneuvers by both parties have stalled various energy-related measures. Democrats have nixed some votes and required super-majorities on others, fearing Republicans will tack on provisions calling for new offshore oil drilling and drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). Environmentalists and their allies in Congress oppose new U.S. drilling.
Senate Republicans have filibustered a number of energy measures (including one aimed at restricting commodity speculation that some say has driven up oil prices) as they press for drilling votes.
The GOP accuses Democrats of being beholden to environmentalists while Dems say the R's are loyal to 'Big Oil' companies.
Gas prices in Arizona were averaging $3.90 per gallon Friday, according to AAA Arizona. In the Valley, gas prices ranged from $3.85 to $3.89 per gallon of self-serve unleaded regular. |
