Description | There’ll soon be a new sheriff in town ... make that the county.
Current Jackson County Sheriff Tom Phillips chose not to run again for the position, leaving the coveted seat open.
Four Democrats and one Republican make up the 2008 ballot. A sixth candidate, retired Kansas City Police Department Major and former Grain Valley Chief of Police Gary Scherer, a Democrat from Blue Springs, has dropped out of the race, citing lack of campaign finances, though his name will still appear on the ballot.
All candidates have Eastern Jackson County roots.
Running on the Democratic ticket are Independence Police Sgt. John Bullard, Independence; Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy Tom Krahenbuhl, Lee’s Summit; former Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy and former Independence Police Officer Mike Mauer, Blue Springs; and Kansas City Police Department volunteer and former policeman Mike Sharp, Kansas City, but formerly of Lee’s Summit.
The lone Republican is Ernie Griffin, a sergeant with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, who is retiring on May 16 after 28 years of service. He lives in Independence.

Whomever is elected faces several complex, and often controversial, issues: long-overdue pay raises for sheriff’s deputies, union contract negotiations, a potential new regional jail and the hotly debated question of whether control of the county jail should return to sheriff’s management. |
