DescriptionOne-time Green Party candidate Carol Miller is considering another run for Congress, a move that could spell trouble for Democrats hoping to hold on to the seat being vacated by Rep. Tom Udall of Santa Fe.

"I am giving thought to it," said Miller, who told the Journal Friday that supporters are urging her to run as an independent in the 3rd Congressional District.

That could make Democrats sweat. Running as a Green in a 1997 special election, Miller won 17 percent of the vote, while Democrat Eric Serna took 40 percent and Republican Bill Redmond won with 43 percent— a shocking result in the overwhelmingly Democratic 3rd District.

Democrats blamed Miller for taking enough votes from Serna to catapult Redmond, a conservative Los Alamos minister, to office. It was the first time a Republican had won the 3rd Congressional seat since it was created in the early 1980s.

In a regular election a year later, both Redmond and Miller lost to Udall, whose positions on health care, the environment and other issues found support among many Green Party members.

Now, Miller says she's entertaining another run out of concern that New Mexico will lose its seniority in the House since Udall and Reps. Steve Pearce and Heather Wilson, both R-N.M., all are running for the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Pete Domenici.
