DescriptionDelegate Joe DeLong will officially announce next week he is a 2008 candidate for West Virginia Secretary of State.

(..)

DeLong serves as majority leader in the West Virginia House of Delegates. At 34, he is the youngest person to hold that post. He also is employed as a marketing executive at Mountaineer Race Track and Gaming Resort. Following his announcement in Wheeling, he will make stops in Clarksburg, Charleston and Bluefield Monday.

(..)

DeLong will be the first candidate to officially announce for what is expected to be an open seat in 2008.

Incumbent West Virginia Secretary of State Betty Ireland reportedly is not going to seek re-election, and she is said to be considering a run for either state Senate or a federal office. Ireland is the first woman to hold an executive office in West Virginia and the first Republican elected to the secretary of state’s office in recent history.

Ireland’s chief of staff, Ben Beakes, said Tuesday that Ireland has yet to make a decision regarding her political future.

DeLong won’t be alone in his quest to be the next secretary of state, as a number of Democrats are coming forth to regain the office for their party.

In addition to DeLong, others rumored to be considering an entry into the race are current state Sen. Billy Wayne Bailey, D-Wyoming, and political consultant Natalie Tennant, who lost a bid for the Democratic nomination to the office in 2004.
