Description | Lynne Cheney, wife of Vice President Dick Cheney, is being floated in Senate GOP leadership circles as a possible replacement for the late Sen. Craig Thomas (R-Wyo.), who died Monday night. Susan Thomas, the late senator's wife, has also been mentioned by Senate Republicans as a potential choice to take over for her husband, as well as former Justice Department official Tom Sansonetti.
One GOP insider said Lynne Cheney had been in Washington "too long" to be acceptable to the Wyoming GOP, despite her long resume, although that would change if Cheney were to return to Wyoming on a full-time basis. Susan Thomas is reportedly not interested in serving out her husband's term.
Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) and Dick Cheney, who attends the regular Tuesday policy luncheon by Senate Republicans, were spotted talking yesterday afternoon, but Enzi said Lynne Cheney was not discussed. In fact, Enzi said, he is not involved in any discussions related to Thomas' replacement..
"I talk to Dick Cheney any chance I can get," Enzi said on Wednesday. "But not about that."
The Wyoming GOP has 15 days from Tuesday to recommend three replacements to Wyoming Gov. Dave Freudenthal (D). Freudenthal will then name Thomas' successor from that list. That person will face a special election next year. Enzi is up for re-election to a third term in 2008 as well.
Other candidates mentioned in media reports include: state Sen. John Barrasso; state Rep. Colin Simpson, son of former Sen. Alan Simpson (R-Wyo.); and U.S. Attorney Matt Mead.
