Plans are quietly under way for the Republican presidential straw poll in Ames, a political spectacle tens of thousands of Iowa GOP activists expect to attend even as the debate continues about the event's meaning in the race for the 2008 nomination.
"You certainly couldn't use it as a scientific survey of support in the state," said Sara Taylor, a key staffer for George W. Bush's 2000 Iowa campaign and now White House political director. "But what it shows is an ability to identify and motivate and mobilize people who support your candidate and get them to show up."
The straw poll, scheduled for Aug. 11, is a fundraiser intended to help the Iowa Republican Party finance the caucuses, an expensive undertaking that the party is responsible for conducting.
More than a third of Republicans planning to attend Iowa's leadoff nominating caucuses in January say they also expect to make the pilgrimage to Ames, according to The Des Moines Register's Iowa Poll.
