Description | Former Gov. Jim Gilmore said Tuesday he will officially start his longshot 2008 White House bid in Iowa this week with a live webcast speech.
The little-known conservative who headed the Republican National Committee in 2001 formed a presidential exploratory committee earlier this year, but raised only about $200,000 through March.
Gilmore said by telephone he will officially declare his candidacy Thursday from Iowa's Republican Party headquarters in Des Moines during his third trip to the early battleground state in as many weeks.
It will be a webcast in part to focus on what campaign policy adviser Dick Leggitt says will become the financial backbone of the campaign: donations made over the Internet by conservatives. |
