CLINTON — Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Waterloo, visited with local veterans and toured Mercy Medical Center’s North campus in an informational trip to Clinton on Monday afternoon.

Braley first appeared before a group of veterans at the Clinton County Administration Building at noon to listen to their concerns regarding several issues. Braley noted his father is a veteran, having served in Iwo Jima, and his brother works at a veterans’ administration hospital. He said he is concerned the government is not doing enough for veterans who have served this country.

Braley said he was happy to be sharing some good news with the veterans, that in the last 100 days, the 110th Congress has done more for veterans’ issues than any other Congress had done in that time in the past. He pointed out that a continuing resolution for Fiscal Year 2007 appropriations increased funding for veterans’ healthcare by $3.6 billion above the 2006 level.

“And that was just the beginnning,” Braley added.

He announced that the Fiscal Year 2008 budget resolution increases funding for veterans’ healthcare and services by $5.4 billion, a 14 percent increase and $3.5 billion more than President George Bush proposed. Braley noted the increase is the largest increase in history for veterans’ healthcare.

Braley said he was pleased to serve as chairman of the committee investigating the Walter Reed Miliatry Hospital scandal. Braley said he followed through on his promise to ask tough questions during the investigation. He said Army Surgeon General Kevin C. Kiley tried to justify the backlog of several disability claims by saying that the science of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder was still evolving.

Braley responded, “With all due respect general, that’s hogwash,” noting that the medical science to diagnose and treat the condition has been around for quite some time. Braley added that Kile
