DescriptionState Rep. Aaron Peterson of Appleton figures that the DFL field might need at least one candidate from rural Minnesota, and he’s thinking it might be him.

Peterson is a third-termer, an assistant majority leader, and the son and grandson of legislators. He’s only 36, and also believes there may be a hunger for someone from a new generation.

He gave me a very hard time getting a clear read on how serious he is about this. One of his first efforts to clarify his leanings went: “Let’s put it this way, I’ve been asked by more than just you.”

But his clearest indication (we’re talking relative clarity, here) was when Peterson said: “Don’t take me off the list” of those who are seriously thinking about getting in.

p.s. I’ve picked up on the vibe that some of the regular commenters are tired of the subject of who’s in, who’s out, and who’s ambivalent about the Senate race. Well excuuuuse me. Once I started down the path, I couldn’t stop until I’d checked up on every name I’d heard, and I kept hearing more names.

The Big Q will get back to regular programming next week.

But it will also be a big week for ‘08 Senate race buzz, with the anticipated announcements of Al Franken and Mike Ciresi, which is one reason I’ve spent this week on this particular quest. So, to review the bidding for those who are joining us late, it appears likely that the field of DFL Senate candidates will include Ciresi and Franken.

Many of those once bruited as possible candidates have expressed no interest, or very little, in joining the field. This includes Congresspeople Tim Walz and Betty McCollum, former candidates for statewide office Ted Mondale and Steve Kelley, Ramsey County Attorney Susan Gaertner, St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman, Mpls. Mayor R.T. Rybak, 2006 Senate candidate Ford Bell and state Sens. Tarryl Clark, Mee Moua and Tom Bakk (although Bakk really only left me a phone message that he was too busy at the Legislature).
