Description | Early voting is just a few days away, and the fundamental dynamics of the election process remain the same. Polls continue to report that as many as two out of three voters want to fire Gov. Rick Perry. The question is, can any one of his opponents hit critical mass?
The debate last week surprised me in a couple of respects. First, it was good television, lively and engaging. The debate rated number one for its time slot in Houston, San Antonio and Austin.
While Carole Keeton Strayhorn delivered a mediocre performance, neither she nor Perry committed any gaffes that would undermine their paid advertising.
Kinky Friedman's participation was probably one of the reasons for the high ratings. I may be proved wrong down the road, but this time the messenger undermined his populist message. He may not have lost any votes, but I doubt if he gained any.
Perry keeps tailoring his message to whatever candidate seems to be the popular opponent of the day.
Democrat Chris Bell was measured and, like Perry, was rehearsed and prepared. He walked away with positive buzz. A $1 million contribution from trial lawyer John O'Quinn kept his story alive in the papers for a few days as did his request for Friedman to drop out. |
