Description | U.S. House Candidate Martha Rainville today called for a Constitutional Amendment to limit the number of terms a lawmaker may serve in the U.S. House of Representatives or the U.S. Senate.
“The fathers of our great nation never intended for politics to be a career. They envisioned a government of the people, by the people and for the people in which farmers and businessmen, doctors and military officers would take time from their careers to serve their fellow citizens,” Rainville said.
Rainville’s Constitutional Amendment would limit lawmakers to a maximum of six terms served in the U.S. House and two terms in the Senate.
“General George Washington first set this example when he only reluctantly agreed to serve a second term and refused to stand for re-election in 1796. That unwritten precedent stood for 150 years before being enshrined in the Constitution by the 22nd Amendment. Now it is time for us to establish similar limits for the legislative branch of Government,” Rainville said.
The new term limits would take effect for lawmakers elected after the Constitutional Amendment is passed. Rainville’s amendment would not affect legislative bodies at the state or local level. |
