DescriptionA group of prominent Bergen County Republicans, including county GOP chairman John Inganamort, formed a committee yesterday to encourage Attorney General Cary Edwards to run for governor next year.

This is the second exploratory committee to be formed for a prospective candidate for the 1989 gubernatorial race. Last month, state Sen. Richard D. Codey (D., Essex) assembled top North Jersey Democrats to determine whether he should enter the Democratic primary in June.

It is expected that at least a dozen prospective gubernatorial candidates will form exploratory committees in the coming weeks.

Under New Jersey law, an exploratory committee allows supporters to independently organize and promote the candidacy of an unannounced gubernatorial aspirant.

Edwards, a former state assemblyman from the Bergen County community of Oakland, has said he would resign his post as attorney general before formally announcing his gubernatorial candidacy.

However, less than 48 hours after the polls closed in this year's election cycle, Edwards' supporters gathered in Bergen County to announce their plans for next year.

"I hope we can convince Attorney General Edwards he has the support base to make a very serious race," said one of his closest associates, Assemblyman William Schuber (R., Bergen), a member of the exploratory committee.

The Republican primary to succeed Gov. Kean is expected to attract a deep field of candidates, including U.S. Rep. Jim Courter (R., N.J.), state Sen. William Gormley (R., Atlantic) and state Assembly Speaker Chuck Hardwick (R., Union).
